Infant Car Seats - Which One is Right For Your Baby?
The best car seat is an important purchase for parents. With a wide variety of car seats for children and baby car seats to choose from, it's essential to be informed.
These rear-facing seats, which are generally R129 or Group 0+ (i-Size) baby car seats for infants, are suitable from the moment of birth. They are often combined with a pram in travel systems.
Group 0+
A car seat for your newborn baby or infant is a must. These seats are designed to protect babies from the dangers of driving including head injuries by ensuring that they remain in the correct position. All-stage car seats are also able to protect infants, however they lack the additional safety features of infant car seats.
Car seats for infants are typically rear-facing and allow the baby to ride in the seat up until 15 months of age. Group 1

The only downside to these seats is that they are unable to be used with an airbag for the front passenger which might not work for some families. Group 2
A car seat for group 2 is designed for infants that are large enough to be upgraded from a Group 0+ but not yet old enough to use a convertible Group 1 car seat. The LATCH connectors, which are rigid, change colour when properly connected. It also features a swivel-base that reduces movement in the vehicle and an inlay that hug the baby’s head, neck, and back to support the proper posture.
The Cybex Aviounaut Pixel Pro is an alternative. It also features an swivel base that is 360 degrees and an exclusive G Cell system that offers protection against collisions with the sides. It's more expensive than the other seats, but provides a good value and great protection. Jasper found the seat comfortable for long trips, and it also is more attractive than the other seats we've tested.
Group 3
A group 3 infant seat is a three-in-one car seat that can be used from birth up to booster stage. The seats are rear-facing (some until your child weighs at minimum 9kg) and then can be turned to face forwards - they can be used in this manner until they reach their maximum weight of 36kg.
These seats are generally very comfortable, and offer good neck and head support. Many of them come with removable and machine-washable padding that is suitable for newborns to keep them germ-free. One of the top models we tested was the Nuna PIPA aire Rx has two inserts – one made of sustainable materials and the second from GOTS certified organic cotton – to ensure your baby feels super cozy.
This model not only has impressive crash test results, but it also has a user-friendly design. It includes a single-handed reclining setting and 12 different headrest positions. It's also easy to install using ISOFIX and comes with an easy-to-read colour change indicator to let you know when it's secure.
We don't recommend switching groups too early as children who are in the lower limits of each group can be more vulnerable to injury in a crash therefore it's best to hold in your old seat until your child hits their new limit. However, there are some excellent alternatives in this category - we especially like the Silver Cross Motion All Size 360 that will ensure your child's safety until their 12th birthday, which is a great option for long-term use.
Another great alternative is the Cozy N Safe Arthur, which will take your baby from the time they were born to their four-year-old booster stage. It's not as expensive the top-rated Silver Cross and has a range of safety and comfort options such as a one-handed recline setting as well as 13 headrest positions.
Group 4
The infant seat of the group 4 is the most recent addition to our list of. It is designed for children from ages 0 to 6. It can be used as a booster seat or in a rear-facing position. This seat is highly praised for its versatility and because it can be used without the need for a base. It's ideal for taxi rides, holiday fly-drives, or trips in grandparent's or rental vehicles.
